Many architects incorporate themselves into their work. Apparently this was not approved for the chapel. I don't know the whereabouts of the groustesque, if it was destroyed or in some collection???

  1. According to a November 5, 1973, letter written by Wm A Knowlton, Lieutenant General, USA, Superintendent of the US Military Academy to Jean St. Clair, Archivist of the National Academy of Science, the Grotesque was located under was known as the “Leper’s Peep Hole” in the Chapel. It was offending some people enough so that it was chiseled off because it was near the Altar where the Sacrament was celebrated. The Chaplin Edward S. Travers was able to save the arm holding the model of the Chapel in 1935, but it is unknown as to what happened to that piece since.
